And there's nothing wrong with that - as long as the interplay between the musicians is there. Even Status Quo, who were similarly relentless in the 70s and IMO have kept up a higher energy level over the years, have already adjusted things to the fact that they're aging. Nothing has knocked me off my socks but ZZ Top have already sounded worse live and anybody would be foolish to expect them to sound the way they did in the 70s.

I've always liked that in songs such as 'Concrete and Steel' (I wish they'd play THAT song again, but, alas.)Īll of this bodes well for the live album, I think. Doubling the guitars at the end was a nice touch. Jeff isn't one of my favourite guitarists but you can never accuse him of not being inventive and I thought he did the song justice. On the plus side I liked Jeff Beck's interpretation of the solo. Bizarre decision since the song very much lives from the vocal melody flowing from one note to the other. it's not obvious to the point that I would have noticed by casually listening, but after it's already been pointed out on here, I can definitely hear it. Frank again sounds in good shape but the triggered drum sounds are not my cup of tea. Obviously they're not going to convince anybody that they can play all the parts themselves with the keyboard clearly audible in the background. No 'Bar-B-Q', by the way, only 'Sloppy Drunk'.

If it wasn't for a questionable drum sound, it would be one of the better versions post-Rockpalast. The ride cymbal was barely audible and I couldn't stop focusing on that damn snare sound. 'La Grange' was a surprisingly energetic performance, but it sounds strangely empty. And the station also played 'Rough Boy', so I've now heard three of the tracks. Slightly edging towards a Queen overdose due to every one of my favourite radio stations celebrating what would have been Freddie's 70s birthday (no knock on the guy - still best frontman the world has ever seen but there's only so many times I can listen to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in one day), I flip around the channels and all of a sudden I'm right in the middle of 'La Grange'. A bit short though and I wish that Billy had also sung the second verse instead of just repeating the first verse.

Bass nicely audible in the mix (but not overbearing) and drumming very much spot on. some bits of 'I Ain't Superstitious' in the intro and some nice blues playing from Jeff whereas Billy plays rhythm only.
